We find it extremely important to create a space where we can reflect on the future through the language of metaphors and imagery, especially here in Israel, where the past and future of civilization are closely intertwined, unlike anywhere else. Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited, while imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress and giving birth to evolution." Artists have an amazing ability, as evidenced by numerous examples in history, to inadvertently foresee the future. They can look beyond the hidden, contemplate what is difficult to imagine, see alternative scenarios, and act as visionaries of possible realities. The future is a unique space where past and present conflicts can be resolved, limitations overcome, and the impossible realized. The exhibition space itself carries symbolic meaning, as the House of Quality Gallery in Jerusalem was historically part of the St. John's Eye Hospital located here until 1970. It seems as if the artists, taking over the baton of healing, continue to heal our eyes and souls.
The exhibition project "What's NEXT?" presents works that speak in different languages of visual art, ranging from classical to the most contemporary and experimental. The dialogue between artists of different generations and cultures is built around the idea of continuity in the timeline and the search for answers to the question "what's next?", including in our past and present.
The idea of dialogue is also reflected in the exhibition itself: the arrangement of the works is not accidental, and their interaction reveals additional meanings of the show and the curatorial concept. You will find ultra-modern works and traditional techniques as well as reinterpretations of the legacy of recognized masters of the past, and mystical teachings whose origins go deep into history. Some artists have presented critical statements about the ugly and painful aspects of the modern world, which are important to overcome in the next stage of our civilization's development.
It may seem that beyond the horizon of time, there will be things we cannot see or feel now: new devices, new creatures, new types of society, and the infrastructure of civilization. At the same time, it is crucial not to exclude ourselves and our choices in the present as the cause of these changes.
The future is an opportunity, and it opens up right now.
